Notification Schedules Are Your Responsibility
A friend sent me a message at 6:19AM today. It woke me up. I sent her a snarky message back (all in good fun). I went back to sleep. Later that same day, she asked me what I was doing at that time and I confessed to her that she'd woken me up with her message which led to her apologising. I told her that she shouldn't be apologising and that it was my fault. Why do I think that? Because there's a very effective technical solution to my problem: notification schedules. I set my sleeping hours on my phone and told her to continue to message me whenever she wanted to. No longer will I be woken up by her messages at that time.
Technologists will often try to solve problems with technical solutions even when they don't really work but there are times where technology really is the solution. This reminds of a story on OzBargain where tech-illerate staff at a school told parents not to send e-mails outside work hours. Nah, that's not happening.
